hellspawn-the-ashley-wood-collection-tpb
Hellspawn: The Ashley Wood Collection TPB

Hellspawn is superb. It takes the better elements of Spawn - the fantastical, supernatural elements - and fuses it with fresh faces. We don't see this story through Spawn, but by everyone around him.

Because of this change Spawn is a force of nature rather than a supernatural hero. Spawn is observed through the eyes of mothers, journalists and Internet geeks. This perspective by itself would not be enough to elevate this series, but Brian M. Bendis and Steve Niles are. Bendis and Niles have an absolute mastery of personality and dialogue (fans of Bendis will immediately recognize his signature banter). Through these writers we gain insight into the characters and Spawn, as well as the rumors and tales that have developed about him. The Internet geeks have a virtual cult, complete with a variety of wild conjectures, dedicated to what the "creature" might be. Bums in an alley have seen Spawn, but one feels the need to elaborate on a theory that Spawn is really Genghis Kahn.

Bendis and Niles fill out the cast with people that interact directly with Spawn, such as a bigot church leader, as well as those completely removed from the supernatural, like a mother whose daughter commits suicide. Every element in these plots serves as further commentary on the concepts that Spawn and his enemies represent. The construction of this world and style portrays Spawn as a legend. When he acts he seems like a god manipulating the world, judging its inhabitants. Even his foes, whether from Heaven or Hell, seem to merely be pawns in his greater scheme.

The real star of this collection is artist Ashley Wood. While that might be somewhat shocking given the title of the book, it is definitely true. Wood's work is absolutely astonishing. It gives the stories and the characters personalities even before a single bit of text is printed on the page. The abstract, removed nature allows raw emotion to pour through on every panel. Fear, rage, sorrow, shock and even loneliness beam through the majestic paintings. As much as Bendis (whose work in this style and genre is sorely missed) and Niles do to create the atmosphere and primal nature of Spawn, Ashley Wood does more. This is an artist truly worthy of a dedicated book. It is worth the price of admission alone.

The work that put ASHLEY WOOD on the artistic map! Dark sequentials - brilliant covers! This is a must-have for any Spawn or ASHLEY WOOD fan. The collection also features a cover gallery, a new never-before-seen cover from Ashley himself, as well as tons of behind the scenes extras!

Collects: Hellspawn (2000-2003) #1-10.

Written By: Brian Michael Bendis and Steve Niles. / Art By: Ashley Wood.

Publication Date: 2006 / Pages: 224 / Condition: ***** 5 Star.
